Department of Nutrition and Dietetics Conducts CME on Practical Nutrition Care for Patients During National Nutrition Month 2026 at BGS Medical College Nagaruru

In observance of National Nutrition Month, the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics in collaboration with the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology successfully conducted a comprehensive Continuing Medical Education program on September 25, 2026. The event, held at the MEU Hall, focused on the critical theme of practical nutrition care for patients across various stages of clinical management, including general ward care, post-operative recovery, and intensive care environments. This specialized awareness initiative was strategically designed to enhance the clinical competencies of nursing staff, who serve as the primary frontline providers in monitoring and administering nutritional therapy.

The academic proceedings were led by a distinguished panel of experts from the fields of surgical gastroenterology and critical care medicine. Dr. Sheshagiri Rao, Head of the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology, alongside Dr. Sagar H C and Dr. Santosh Kumar R, provided profound insights into the physiological requirements of surgical patients and the importance of early nutritional intervention in improving surgical outcomes. Their presentations underscored the vital link between optimal nutrition and the reduction of post-operative complications and hospital stay duration.

Addressing the complexities of metabolic support in life-support settings, a team of critical care specialists including Dr. Puneeth J, Dr. Arun T C, and Dr. Maheeja shared contemporary evidence-based practices for ICU nutrition. These experts discussed the nuances of enteral and parenteral nutrition, emphasizing the role of personalized feeding protocols in managing critically ill patients. The technical sessions highlighted the collaborative necessity between surgeons, intensivists, and dieticians to ensure a seamless transition of care from the operating theater to the intensive care unit and eventually the general wards.

The program was expertly moderated by Mrs. Kusuma B S, Senior Clinical Dietician, who facilitated a dynamic exchange of ideas between the faculty and the nursing attendees. The interactive format allowed for a detailed exploration of practical challenges faced in daily clinical routines, ensuring that the theoretical knowledge presented could be directly translated into improved bedside care. By focusing on the holistic management of patient health through dietetics, the institution continues to demonstrate its commitment to interdisciplinary excellence and the advancement of clinical standards during National Nutrition Month.
