Department of Psychiatry at BGS Medical College Concludes Strategic Workshop on Postvention for World Suicide Prevention Day 2026
World Suicide Prevention Day 2026 – Workshop on Postvention
The Department of Psychiatry, BGS Medical College and Hospital, observed World Suicide Prevention Day 2026 by conducting a specialised postvention workshop on September 11, 2026, at the MEU Hall. The inaugural function was held in the presence of the Dean, Chief of Hospital, and Principals of Nursing and Physiotherapy, highlighting the institution’s commitment to a multidisciplinary approach to suicide prevention and mental healthcare.
The programme aligned with the 2026 theme, “Changing the Narrative on Suicide,” with the call to action “Start the Conversation,” emphasising openness, empathy, and meaningful conversations around suicide and its impact.
Dr. Nandini Murali, Lead of Project SPEAK and an advocate for suicide postvention, served as the resource person. Drawing from her lived experience of suicide loss, she encouraged participants to look beyond conventional clinical frameworks and recognise the complex relational, social, cultural, and gendered dimensions of suicide loss.
The workshop explored the experiences of survivors, including trauma, stigma, guilt, shame, and disrupted relationships, while highlighting postvention as an essential component of comprehensive suicide care and future prevention.
The programme brought together psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, postgraduate residents, PhD scholars, and faculty from allied disciplines. Participant feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with appreciation for the interdisciplinary learning and lived-experience perspective.
