BGS Medical College and Hospital Concludes World Breastfeeding Week 2026 with Community Outreach and Academic Initiatives
The Department of Pediatrics and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at BGS Medical College and Hospital successfully concluded the World Breastfeeding Week 2026 celebrations with a series of high-impact community outreach and academic initiatives. On the final day of the week-long observance, 07 August 2026, the institution organized a comprehensive awareness programme at the BGS MCH Outreach Clinic, Madanayakanahalli, followed by a formal closing ceremony at the MEU Hall, BGS Medical College & Hospital. These activities were designed to reinforce the critical importance of breastfeeding as a foundation for lifelong health and to educate both healthcare professionals and the general public on best practices for maternal and child nutrition.
The community outreach segment at the BGS MCH Outreach Clinic, Madanayakanahalli, featured specialized awareness talks delivered by a multidisciplinary team of experts. Dr. Lavanya S, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, joined Dr. Thriveni from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Dr. Bindhu, the institutional dietician, to provide evidence-based guidance to antenatal and postnatal mothers. The session focused on the early initiation of breastfeeding, the necessity of exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months, and the long-term health benefits for both mother and child. This outreach effort was conducted under the supervision of Dr. K. S. Krishna Murthy, Chief of Health at BGS Medical College and Hospital, ensuring that the local community received direct access to professional medical counselling.
The formal closing ceremony held at the MEU Hall, BGS Medical College & Hospital, served as a reflection on the week’s achievements and a celebration of collaborative efforts across various departments. Dr. K. S. Gangadhara, Dean-cum-Principal of BGS Medical College and Hospital, presided over the event alongside other senior administrative figures, including RMO Dr. Pradeep Kumar and various department heads. Dr. Ramesh M, Professor and Head of the Department of Pediatrics, presented a detailed report summarizing the educational skits, scientific sessions, and interactive workshops held throughout the week. A video presentation further documented the diverse range of activities, highlighting the collective commitment of the Departments of Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Neonatology, and Community Medicine.

These included a Rangoli competition, poster presentation session, and breastfeeding quiz. The final round of the quiz competition, moderated by Dr. Supreeth Prasad and Dr. Srusty, tested the participants’ clinical knowledge and reinforced essential concepts in infant care. The prize distribution ceremony, led by Dr. Aby Dany Varghese and Dr. Nagaraj M. V, honoured the top three performers in each category, acknowledging their dedication to promoting maternal and child health.
