Department of Community Medicine Observes World Rabies Day 2026 with Focus on Rabies Prevention and Control at BGS Medical College and Hospital, Nagaruru

The Department of Community Medicine at BGS Medical College and Hospital successfully organized a comprehensive program to observe World Rabies Day on September 28 2026. Held at the MEU Hall within the campus premises, the event aimed to bolster institutional awareness and clinical excellence in the management and prevention of rabies. The proceedings brought together distinguished medical professionals and academic leaders to reflect on the global mission to eliminate rabies-related fatalities.

The event commenced with a formal welcome note delivered by Dr Venkatesh P, Professor of Community Medicine, who emphasized the significance of public health interventions in tackling zoonotic diseases. Following the welcome address, Dr Raghuram V, Head of the Department of Community Medicine, formally introduced the esteemed chief guest, Dr M K Sudarshan. The program was expertly moderated by Dr Sindhu Shankar, Assistant Professor of Community Medicine, who served as the Master of Ceremonies for the duration of the event.

Academic leadership was represented by Dr K S Gangadhara, Dean and Principal of BGS Medical College and Hospital, alongside Dr V R Krishnamurthy, Chief of Hospital. Their participation underscored the institution commitment to integrating specialized public health initiatives into the broader clinical framework. Further enhancing the technical discourse, Dr Chiranthan, Assistant Professor of Community Medicine, provided a detailed insight into the functioning of the Anti Rabies Clinic at the hospital, highlighting the facility role in providing essential post exposure prophylaxis to the local community.

The session featured an illuminating keynote address by Dr M K Sudarshan, a towering figure in the field of public health. As a former Director and Retired Dean of KIMS Bengaluru, and a member of the WHO Expert Advisory Panel on Rabies, Dr Sudarshan shared profound insights drawn from his extensive career. His contributions as the Founder President and Mentor of the APCRI and the Rabies in Asia Foundation provided the audience with a deep understanding of the epidemiological challenges and strategic breakthroughs in rabies control. His presence was particularly significant given his recent role as the Chairman of the Karnataka COVID 19 Technical Advisory Committee and his recognition as a recipient of the prestigious Karnataka Rajyotsava Award.

The program concluded with a formal vote of thanks delivered by Dr Mohammed Tanveer Ahmed, Associate Professor of Community Medicine. He expressed gratitude to the speakers, organizers, and attendees for their commitment to this vital public health cause. The observation of World Rabies Day 2026 at BGS Medical College and Hospital stands as a testament to the institution ongoing efforts to educate the medical fraternity and improve patient outcomes through evidence based practices and expert collaboration.
