Inauguration of the Safe Drug Disposal Initiative at BGS Medical College and Hospital, Nagaruru

The Department of Clinical Pharmacology at BGS Medical College and Hospital officially launched the Safe Drug Disposal Initiative on June 13, 2026. Held at the hospital reception area, the event brought together healthcare professionals, faculty members, and students under the vital theme of disposing medicines safely today to protect health and the environment for tomorrow. This institutional effort addresses the critical global concern regarding the improper disposal of unused and expired medications, which poses significant risks such as accidental poisoning, drug misuse, and ecological degradation.

Dr. Malini S, Professor and Head of the Department of Clinical Pharmacology, introduced the program by outlining the inherent dangers of pharmaceutical waste. The formal inauguration was led by Dr. K. S. Gangadhar, Dean and Principal, who delivered a keynote address on the responsibility of medical institutions to champion public health and environmental stewardship. He emphasized that medical practitioners must serve as the first line of defense in educating the public about the hazards of self-medication and the necessity of returning unused drugs through proper institutional channels.

Furthering the discussion on practical implementation, Dr. Krishnamurthy V. R., Chief of Hospital, addressed the logistical challenges associated with pharmaceutical waste management. He noted that community involvement is essential for the success of such health programs and commended the Department of Clinical Pharmacology for establishing a structured framework for drug collection. Central to this initiative was the introduction of designated drug disposal bins strategically placed within the hospital premises, providing a safe and accessible means for patients and the public to discard their medications.

The initiative highlights the severe environmental impact of traditional disposal methods, such as flushing medicines or placing them in general waste, which can lead to the contamination of soil and water systems. By functioning as a collection center and providing expert guidance, BGS Medical College and Hospital aligns its practices with scientific and regulatory standards. The program concluded with a call to action for all stakeholders to maintain continuous awareness, ensuring that the initiative leads to long term behavioral changes that safeguard the community and the planet.
