Department of Psychiatry, BGS VINS, Hosts Adolescent Mental Health Program

The BGS VINS Department of Psychiatry successfully conducted a comprehensive adolescent mental health program at BGS PU College on September 12, 2026. This initiative was specifically designed to foster awareness regarding suicide prevention, promote psychological well-being, and encourage open communication among the youth. By emphasizing the necessity of seeking timely professional help and offering support to those in emotional distress, the department aimed to equip students with the tools required to navigate the complexities of mental health during their formative years.

The proceedings commenced with a formal welcome and program introduction delivered by Ms. Thara Devi N. She extended her gratitude to the faculty members of the psychiatry department and the student participants, while offering a special welcome to the Principal of BGS PU College, Mr. Shanthakumar H.P. The introduction set a serious and supportive tone for the day, highlighting the vital importance of addressing mental health within the educational environment.

Following the opening remarks, Ms. Sreshta and Ms. Anat Antano provided an insightful introduction to World Suicide Prevention Day. Their presentation focused on the urgent need to dismantle the stigma surrounding mental health issues and the importance of cultivating a supportive community where individuals feel safe discussing their emotional challenges. This was followed by a dedicated awareness talk led by Mrs. Saraswati,Lecturer,Department of Psychiatry who discussed the clinical and social aspects of recognizing emotional distress. Her session reinforced the power of empathy and active listening as primary tools for intervention and prevention.

To further engage the student body, the program featured a series of creative mime performances led by various student teams. They directed their respective groups in visual storytelling displays that highlighted themes of interpersonal support and emotional resilience. These performances translated complex psychological concepts into an accessible format, allowing students to reflect on the impact of their actions and words on their peers.

The event concluded with a formal vote of thanks delivered by Ms. Thara Devi N, who recognized the contributions of the speakers, organizing committee, and the college administration. The program successfully provided students with a meaningful understanding of mental health, encouraging them to be vigilant for signs of distress in themselves and others. By integrating academic expertise with creative engagement, the Department of Mental Health Nursing has reinforced its commitment to the holistic well-being of the adolescent population.
