Thakarthonam 2026: BGS VINS, VIPT & VIAHS Celebrate the Spirit of Onam with Culture, Unity and Camaraderie
The academic community of the BGS Medical College and Hospital came together in a vibrant display of cultural heritage during Thakarthonam 2026, held on August 17, 2026. Organized by the collective efforts of students from BGS VINS, VIPT, and VIAHS, the event served as a significant platform to celebrate the spirit of Onam while fostering unity, teamwork, and active participation among the student body and faculty members. The festivities commenced at the hospital premises in front of the Lord Dhanvanthari Temple with a formal inauguration ceremony that set a respectful and celebratory tone for the day.
The inaugural proceedings featured a beautifully crafted Pookalam and a soulful invocation song, followed by the ceremonial lighting of the lamp by the gathered dignitaries. Dr. Krishnamurthy V. R., Chief of Hospital at BGSMCH, joined Dr. K. S. Gangadhara, Dean cum Principal, and other institutional heads including Dr. Byresh A., Dr. ShriHarsha C., Dr. Madan Mohan M. R., and Dr. Payal Bharadwaj M. R. in officiating the opening. The Dean delivered an insightful address emphasizing the importance of cultural appreciation in professional education, followed by the official unveiling of the day’s events and a formal vote of thanks.
A grand and colorful procession marked the next phase of the celebration, moving from the college gate to the main grounds. The traditional welcome of Maveli, accompanied by the rhythmic sounds of the campus environment, created an immersive festive atmosphere. Students demonstrated their artistic prowess through a series of cultural performances, most notably the traditional Thiruvathira dance. These performances provided a vital opportunity for participants to express their talents while honoring the long standing traditions of Kerala.
The afternoon session shifted toward physical engagement and camaraderie with a series of traditional and recreational games. Participants engaged in spirited competitions including musical chairs, lemon and spoon races, Sundhari Pottuthai, and the high energy Uriyadi. The Tug of War emerged as a highlight of the day, effectively promoting coordination and healthy competition among the various departments. These activities were designed not only for entertainment but to strengthen the social fabric of the institution through shared experience and teamwork.
A hallmark of the celebration was the traditional Onam Sadhya, served to all students and staff members. This communal meal served as a moment of fellowship, allowing the diverse campus community to bond over authentic cuisine. The festivities reached a crescendo with a powerful Chendamelam performance, whose energetic percussion added a final layer of vibrancy to the event.
