BGS MCH Physiotherapy Team Extends On-Court Support at the 29th Dr. Somanna Memorial Badminton Tournament

The twenty ninth edition of the Dr. Somanna Memorial Badminton Tournament recently concluded at the Karnataka Badminton Association in Vasanth Nagar, Bengaluru, marking another successful year of high level athletic competition. Held on August 22nd and 23rd, 2026, the tournament brought together a diverse group of prominent athletes to compete at one of the premier sporting venues in the region. To ensure the physical well being and peak performance of the participants, the Department of Physiotherapy at BGS Medical College and Hospital, in collaboration with the Indian Medical Association team, provided comprehensive on field medical and rehabilitative support throughout the two day event.

The physiotherapy delegation was meticulously organized to provide continuous coverage and immediate care for all participating athletes. The clinical team consisted of Dr. Siri S and Dr. Poornambika S, both highly skilled clinical physiotherapists, alongside Dr. Akhil Kumar, Assistant Professor and member of the teaching faculty. This professional group remained stationed on site to deliver a wide array of specialized services, including the immediate assessment of acute sports injuries and the management of minor physical complaints that often arise during high intensity racquet sports.

In addition to emergency response, the team focused heavily on preventative measures and performance optimization. Athletes received personalized sessions for stretching and flexibility to enhance their agility on the court. The practitioners also utilized advanced taping techniques to provide structural support for joints and muscles, which is critical in preventing new injuries and managing pre existing conditions. By offering expert guidance on recovery protocols and basic injury management, the physiotherapy team empowered the athletes to maintain their competitive edge safely.

The collaboration between BGS Medical College and Hospital and the IMA team underscores a shared commitment to sports medicine and community health. By deploying experienced faculty and clinicians to major sporting events, the Department of Physiotherapy continues to demonstrate its expertise in managing the complex needs of athletes. The presence of the medical team not only ensured a high standard of safety for the competitors but also highlighted the vital role of specialized physiotherapy in the modern sporting landscape. The successful conclusion of the tournament serves as a testament to the seamless integration of athletic excellence and professional medical support.
