BGS Medical College and Hospital Hosts Breastfeeding Awareness Programme for Postnatal Mothers
The Department of Pediatrics at BGS Medical College and Hospital continued its commemorative activities for World Breastfeeding Week with a comprehensive awareness programme held on August 4, 2026. Hosted within the postnatal wards, the fourth day of the week long celebration focused on direct engagement with new mothers to promote the clinical and nutritional benefits of breastfeeding. The event served as a collaborative platform bringing together experts from neonatology, pediatrics, and obstetrics to address the multifaceted needs of maternal and neonatal health.
The proceedings commenced with a formal introduction by Dr. Gayathri Devi, setting a professional tone for the educational sessions that followed. A central feature of the day was an in depth educational lecture delivered by the programme coordinator, which detailed the physiological advantages of breastfeeding for both the infant and the mother. This academic discourse was further enriched by the presence and insights of esteemed faculty members, including Dr. Sahana Devadas, Professor of Neonatology, and Dr. Indumathi M, Associate Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Their participation underscored the interdisciplinary approach required to support successful lactation practices in a clinical setting.
Nutritional science played a pivotal role in the days curriculum as Dietician Bindhu conducted a specialized session on maternal dietetics. She emphasized the importance of balanced nutrition for lactating mothers to ensure the quality of breast milk and the maintenance of maternal health. By addressing specific dietary requirements and debunking common myths, the session provided the mothers with practical, evidence based guidance to follow during the postnatal period.
To ensure the information was accessible and memorable, nursing students performed an educational skit that creatively illustrated key breastfeeding techniques and the importance of exclusive breastfeeding.
