First Aid Awareness Programme on the Eve of World First Aid Day

Introduction

On the occasion of World First Aid Day, BGS Medical College & Hospital, Nagarur organized an Outreach First Aid Awareness Programme at the Doddakarehalli Toll Plaza, Nelamangala on 13th September 2025 . Themed “Be Prepared to Handle Medical Emergencies”, the initiative emphasized the importance of first aid knowledge, confidence-building, and skill development among frontline personnel who are often the first responders in emergencies.

These programmes play a vital role in reducing morbidity and improving outcomes for victims by equipping community stakeholders with life-saving techniques.

Objectives Achieved

  • Enhanced awareness of first aid among toll plaza personnel.

  • Improved capacity to respond effectively to medical emergencies in the workplace.

  • Reinforced the importance of prompt and safe action in critical scenarios.

Participants

The programme was attended by 40 staff members, including toll plaza personnel and staff from the Nelamangala Toll Authority.

Programme Highlights

  1. First Aid Principles: Introduction to the importance and scope of first aid in emergencies.

  2. Emergency Response: Guidance on managing bleeding, burns, fractures, cardiac arrest, and other emergencies.

  3. Practical Demonstrations: Hands-on training in CPR basics, wound management, and use of first aid equipment.

  4. Scenario-Based Training: Simulated situations reflecting toll plaza emergencies.

  5. Interactive Sessions: Open discussions and Q&A addressing real-life concerns.

Faculty & Coordination

The programme was conducted by Dr. Malini (Associate Professor, Pharmacology) and Dr. Sudarshan Yadav (Senior Resident, Anaesthesiology), under the guidance of Dr. Renuka R (Professor & HOD, Anaesthesiology; Skills & Simulation Lab Coordinator; Chairperson, Simulation Lab) and Dr. K S Gangadhara (Dean-cum-Principal, BGS MCH).

Feedback & Recommendations

Participants appreciated the practical approach and workplace relevance of the training. Recommendations included:

  • Conducting periodic refresher courses to sustain competency.

  • Expanding similar programmes to other toll plazas and community hubs.

Conclusion

The First Aid Awareness Programme successfully imparted essential skills and confidence to toll plaza personnel, preparing them to act effectively in critical medical situations. By extending knowledge beyond hospital walls, BGS MCH continues its commitment to community engagement and patient safety.

This initiative also aligns with SDG 16 – Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, by fostering inclusive and accountable systems that safeguard community health.
