Awareness & Basics of Immunisation to Adichuchangiri Ayurvedic Medical students at BGS Medical College Nagarur

Immunization is one of the most effective and economical public-health interventions for preventing infectious diseases. The talk highlighted the role of vaccines in reducing morbidity, mortality, and disability across all age groups, especially among children. Students were encouraged to view immunization not as a system separate from Ayurveda, but as a complementary preventive strategy.

Importance of Immunization Prevention of Disease: Vaccines protect individuals from life-threatening infectious diseases by enhancing the body’s immune response.

Community Protection (Herd Immunity): High vaccination coverage prevents disease transmission, protecting vulnerable groups such as infants, elderly, and immunocompromised individuals.

Reduction in Mortality and Morbidity: Immunization has drastically reduced deaths due to diseases like smallpox, polio, measles, and tetanus.

Cost-Effective Public Health Measure: Preventing disease through vaccination is far more economical than treating advanced illness and complications.

Support to National Health Programs: Immunization strengthens public health infrastructure and contributes to national development.

Achievements of Vaccination

Global Eradication of Smallpox (1980): The first and only human disease eradicated through vaccination.

Polio Elimination: India was declared polio-free in 2014 due to sustained immunization efforts.

Reduction in Child Mortality: Vaccines against measles, diphtheria, pertussis, and tetanus have saved millions of lives.

Control of Epidemics: Vaccination has effectively controlled outbreaks of diseases like hepatitis B, rubella, and COVID-19.

Improved Life Expectancy: Immunization has played a significant role in increasing average lifespan worldwide.

Relevance to Ayurvedic Practice

The talk stressed that Ayurvedic practitioners play a crucial role in health education, counseling, and community acceptance of vaccines. By combining Ayurvedic principles of immunity (Vyadhikshamatva) with modern immunization, a holistic approach to disease prevention can be achieved.

The session concluded by reinforcing that immunization is a proven, safe, and essential preventive tool. Ayurvedic medical students, as future healthcare providers, were encouraged to actively support immunization programs, address misconceptions, and promote evidence-based preventive healthcare for the well-being of society.
