BGS MCH & BGSVINS Organize SDG Awareness Programme on Health, Equity and Well-being
The SDG Cell at BGS Medical College and Hospital, in strategic collaboration with the BGS Vijnatham Institute of Nursing Sciences, successfully conducted a comprehensive awareness programme focused on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Held on September 18, 2026, at the BGSVINS campus, the event titled Advancing Health, Equity, and Well-being sought to sensitize future healthcare practitioners to the critical intersections between clinical practice and global sustainability. The proceedings commenced with a traditional floral tribute to Parama Poojya Jagadguru Sri Sri Sri Balagangadharanatha Maha Swamiji, setting a solemn and purposeful tone for the days deliberations.
Dr. Venkatesh, Professor in the Department of Community Health Medicine at BGS Medical College and Hospital, delivered the inaugural address. During his presentation, he articulated the profound scope of the Sustainable Development Goals, addressing systemic global challenges such as poverty, hunger, quality education, and gender equality. He argued that true sustainable development transcends mere economic metrics and must encompass the preservation of human dignity, the provision of universal healthcare, and the protection of the natural environment. His address underscored the necessity of a holistic approach to public health that aligns with international standards of equity and social responsibility.
The pedagogical framework of the event was further enriched by Dr. Shriharsha C, Principal of the BGS Vijnatham Institute of Nursing Sciences. He provided a detailed overview of the historical evolution of the goals, specifically highlighting the pivotal role of nursing professionals in achieving Goal 3, which pertains to Good Health and Well-being. Dr. Shriharsha emphasized that nurses are at the forefront of health promotion and community engagement, serving as essential catalysts for equitable healthcare delivery. He urged the student body to adopt practices that prioritize responsible resource management within clinical settings to ensure long-term environmental and institutional sustainability.
In a departure from traditional lecture formats, Dr. Madan Mohan, Principal of the BGS Vijnatham Institute of Physiotherapy, utilized a storytelling methodology to elucidate the seventeen interconnected goals. This innovative instructional approach allowed participants to grasp the complex relationships between social, economic, and environmental factors in a more relatable and memorable manner. The event also benefited from the presence and coordination of Dr. Subba Krishna N, along with diverse faculty members and students from the fields of nursing, physiotherapy, and allied health sciences, showcasing a robust multidisciplinary commitment to global health mandates.
The awareness programme concluded by reinforcing the professional responsibility of healthcare workers as advocates for community well-being and environmental stewardship. By integrating these global objectives into the academic curriculum and professional ethos, the participating institutions have strengthened their commitment to fostering a generation of healthcare providers who are not only clinically competent but also socially conscious. The event served as a significant step forward in translating high-level international goals into actionable educational and community-based initiatives.
