Community awareness program on hazards of tobacco exposure on adolescence and COTPA Act.
Tobacco use remains one of the leading causes of preventable morbidity and mortality worldwide. Adolescents are particularly vulnerable to the harmful effects of tobacco exposure, which can lead to lifelong addiction and health issues. This community awareness program aimed at educating adolescents about the hazards of tobacco exposure and the provisions of the Cigarette and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), 2003.
Dr. Venkatesh, Professor, highlighted the alarming prevalence of tobacco use in India, emphasizing that it remains one of the highest in the world. With an estimated 267 million tobacco users, India faces a significant public health challenge, particularly among adolescents and young adults. Factors contributing to this high prevalence include cultural acceptance of tobacco use, aggressive marketing by tobacco companies, and a lack of awareness about its health risks.
Dr. Sindhu, Assisstant Professor, discussed various forms of tobacco use, including smoking and smokeless tobacco products. She emphasized the significant health risks associated with both direct and second hand tobacco exposure. While many are aware of the dangers of smoking cigarettes, Dr. Sindhu highlighted that other forms, such as beedis and cigars, also pose severe health threats including respiratory diseases, cardiovascular issues, and various cancers, particularly lung cancer. Additionally, she spoke about thirdhand smoke, which refers to the residual toxins that remain on surfaces after tobacco has been smoked. These toxins can pose long-term health risks, particularly to vulnerable populations. Dr. Sindhu concluded by stressing the importance of comprehensive tobacco control measures and community education to mitigate these risks effectively.
Following Dr. Sindhu’s presentation, an interactive session was held to engage participants in a discussion about tobacco use and its impacts.
Ranganatha, MSW , provided a comprehensive overview of the Cigarette and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), emphasizing its critical role in tobacco control in India. He explained that COTPA was enacted in 2003 to curb the rising prevalence of tobacco use and protect public health. He concluded by stressing that awareness and education about COTPA are essential for its success, enabling individuals to make informed choices and promote a healthier society.
