First Basic Course in Medical Education Workshop (BCME) conducted at BGS Medical College & Hospital, Nagarur, Bengaluru

Introduction

The first Basic Course in Medical Education (BCME) was successfully conducted at BGS Medical College & Hospital, Nagarur, from 4th to 6th November 2025. The program was held with the divine blessings of Paramapoojya Jagadguru Padmabhushana Puraskrutha Sri Sri Sri Dr. Balagangadharanatha Mahaswamiji and Paramapoojya Jagadguru Sri Sri Sri Dr. Nirmalanandanatha Mahaswamiji.

Organized by the Medical Education Unit (MEU) under the chairmanship of Dean Dr. K. S. Gangadhara, and coordinated by Dr. Satish S. Patil, the workshop aimed to enhance teaching, learning, and assessment competencies among medical faculty in alignment with the Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) framework prescribed by the National Medical Commission (NMC).

This initiative reflects the institution’s commitment to Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and Goal 4 (Quality Education) by ensuring continuous faculty development and improving the quality of medical training.

Event Proceedings

The three-day workshop was inaugurated in the presence of faculty members, curriculum committee representatives, and participants from various departments. The program was observed by Dr. Carol Shayne D’Silva, Coordinator from the Department of Critical Care Medicine, St. John’s Medical College, Bengaluru, representing the National Medical Commission.

Day 1

The first day began with a lively group dynamics session led by Dr. Venkatesh P, promoting collaboration through an engaging team-building activity, “Crossing the River.” Subsequent sessions by Dr. Murali B. M., Dr. Sangeetha S., Dr. Spoorthy S., and Dr. Jyothi S. explored key aspects of learning processes, defining learning objectives, and innovative teaching-learning methods, including interactive and small-group teaching.
The day concluded with sessions on assessment principles and internal assessment methods conducted by Dr. Satish S. Patil and Dr. Sandeep T., respectively.

Day 2

The second day emphasized advanced teaching and assessment strategies.
Dr. Satish S. Patil initiated the day with an insightful session on implementing AETCOM competencies, followed by Dr. Syed Sadat Ali who discussed self-directed learning.
An interactive demonstration on effective clinical and practical skill teaching was conducted by Dr. K. S. Gangadhara and Dr. Vijay Nagraj. Post-lunch, Dr. Sangeetha S. guided participants on aligning teaching-learning methods with competencies, followed by an engaging session on blueprinting and question paper setting led by Dr. Shubha Praveen and Dr. Pooja R. Raikar.

Day 3

The final day focused on assessment and mentoring in medical education.
Dr. Jyothi S. conducted a session on lesson planning, while Dr. Dhanush H. and Dr. Pooja R. Raikar demonstrated skill assessment techniques. Dr. Gireesh P. spoke about academic growth and networking, and Dr. Sandyarani D. C. discussed aligning assessments with competencies.
Later, Dr. Satish S. Patil led a session on mentoring, and Dr. Suma M. P. facilitated the drafting of a competency-based timetable. The program concluded with a post-test and reflective feedback session, where participants lauded the workshop for its interactive format, practical focus, and innovative approach to teaching and assessment.
