Preventing the Spread: Scabies Awareness and Treatment Drive at Chilume Mata, Solur Hostel

Introduction

As part of its ongoing outreach and community health initiatives, the Department of Community Medicine, BGS Medical College and Hospital, Nagarur, in coordination with the Outreach Clinic, Solur, conducted a two-day Scabies Screening, Awareness, and Treatment Camp at Chilume Mata Hostel, Solur, on 21st November 2025 and a follow-up visit on 4th December 2025. The programme aimed at early detection and management of skin-related conditions, with special emphasis on scabies prevention, treatment, and the promotion of personal hygiene practices among hostel residents.

Event Proceedings

The health camp was conducted for hostel students and staff under the guidance of a multidisciplinary medical team comprising Dr. Satheesh B.C., Professor, Department of Community Medicine; Dr. Raghavendra B.N., Professor and Head, Department of Dermatology and Venereology; and Dr. Bhoomika N., Senior Resident, Department of Community Medicine.

During the camp, Dr. Raghavendra B.N. carried out detailed dermatological examinations of students and staff. Several suspected cases of scabies along with other minor skin conditions were identified. Appropriate treatment was initiated immediately, and medications were provided free of cost. Demonstrations and instructions on correct medication usage were also given to ensure treatment compliance.

Dr. Satheesh B.C. addressed the participants on the importance of personal hygiene, cleanliness, and routine health practices. He emphasized how simple preventive measures can significantly reduce the spread of communicable diseases, particularly in shared living environments such as hostels.

An awareness session was conducted by Dr. Bhoomika N., focusing on the mode of transmission of scabies, early warning signs, and practical preventive measures. She also counselled hostel staff on maintaining cleanliness within the hostel premises, including regular washing and sun-drying of clothes and bedding, and the importance of early reporting of symptoms.

The programme was efficiently coordinated with the support of Mr. Lokesh U. (Patient Coordinator), Mr. Sanjay (PRO), Mr. Danush (Nurse), and Mrs. Manjula (Receptionist), whose efforts ensured smooth conduct of the camp and effective participation.

Conclusion

The scabies screening and awareness programme was well received by the hostel residents and staff and successfully achieved its objectives of improving hygiene practices and promoting preventive healthcare. The initiative reflects the continued commitment of BGS Medical College and Hospital, Nagarur, towards strengthening community health through sustained outreach activities.
