“Physiotherapy-Based Community Rehabilitation and Health Awareness Program for Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke Prevention”

Under the divine blessings of Jai Sri Gurudev, the BGS Vijnatham Institute of Physiotherapy organized a significant community outreach program focused on the prevention and rehabilitation of cardiovascular diseases and stroke. The initiative took place on June 26, 2026, at the Prashant Chakaravarthy Destitute Home. This social responsibility endeavor was led by second year Bachelor of Physiotherapy students under the expert guidance and supervision of faculty members Dr. G V Sarath and Dr. Vaishnavi Puranik. The program was designed to address the critical health needs of the elderly population while fostering a sense of community service among budding healthcare professionals.

The proceedings commenced with an insightful educational session delivered by Dr. Gunarathna K. The lecture provided comprehensive information regarding the risk factors, early warning signs, and preventive measures associated with cardiovascular conditions and stroke. Dr. Gunarathna emphasized the necessity of timely intervention and the vital role of specialized care in managing these chronic health issues. This academic discourse served as a foundation for the practical sessions that followed, ensuring that the residents understood the clinical importance of the activities being conducted.

Following the theoretical presentation, the second year physiotherapy students facilitated a series of supervised group exercises. These movements were specifically curated to improve cardiovascular health, enhance mobility, and aid in the long term rehabilitation of the elderly participants. In addition to physical strengthening, the team conducted various recreational exercises aimed at promoting emotional well being and psychological resilience. The interactive nature of these sessions created a supportive environment, encouraging the residents to adopt a more active and health conscious lifestyle.

For the participating students, the outreach program served as an invaluable experiential learning opportunity. Beyond the application of clinical skills, the event required high levels of empathy, effective communication, and collaborative teamwork. By engaging directly with residents at the destitute home, the students gained a deeper understanding of the social determinants of health and the importance of compassionate care. The BGS Vijnatham Institute of Physiotherapy continues to prioritize such initiatives to ensure that its graduates are not only technically proficient but also socially responsible members of the global healthcare community.
