Department of Pediatrics Hosts Educational Programme for World Breastfeeding Week 2026
The Department of Pediatrics successfully conducted the fourth day of World Breastfeeding Week 2026 with a comprehensive awareness programme held at the postnatal wards on April 4, 2026. This initiative was designed to empower new mothers with the essential knowledge and practical skills required for successful breastfeeding, which remains a cornerstone of neonatal health and maternal well-being. The event served as a collaborative platform bringing together specialists from various clinical departments to provide a holistic perspective on infant nutrition and maternal care.
The proceedings commenced with a formal introduction by Dr. Gayathri Devi, who outlined the objectives of the awareness campaign and emphasized the critical role of breastfeeding in the early stages of life. Following the introduction, the organizing coordinator delivered an educational lecture focusing on the physiological benefits of breast milk and proper breastfeeding techniques. The interdisciplinary nature of the event was further highlighted by the presence and contributions of Dr. Sahana, Professor from the Department of Neonatology, and Dr. Indumathi, Associate Professor from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, alongside Dr. Vaishnavi. Their participation underscored the institutional commitment to integrated maternal and child healthcare.
Nutritional science played a significant role in the days activities as Dietician Bindhu conducted an educational session specifically tailored for postnatal mothers. She provided detailed guidance on appropriate maternal nutrition during the lactation period, explaining how a balanced diet for the mother directly influences the quality of milk and the health of the infant. This session addressed common dietary concerns and offered practical advice for maintaining energy levels and nutritional status during the postpartum phase.
To ensure the educational messages were accessible and memorable, nursing students performed a creative breastfeeding awareness skit. The performance effectively illustrated key concepts such as positioning, attachment, and the management of common breastfeeding challenges through an engaging narrative format.
