Hospital Waste Management Training Programme for Nursing Staff

Introduction:
BGS Medical College and Hospital, Nagarur, in collaboration with the Indian Society of Hospital Waste Management (ISHWM) – Karnataka Chapter, successfully conducted a Hospital Waste Management Training Programme for Nursing Staff on 13 December 2025. The programme was organized with the objective of strengthening awareness and enhancing best practices related to biomedical and liquid waste management, healthcare worker safety, and regulatory compliance among nursing professionals.
The training was organized under the leadership of the Department of Microbiology and the Hospital Infection Control Committee, emphasizing the institution’s commitment to patient safety, occupational health, and environmental responsibility.
Event Proceedings:
The programme commenced at 10:30 am with a Welcome Address delivered by Dr. Lyra P. R, Associate Professor, Department of Microbiology and Infection Control Officer, BGS Medical College and Hospital. She welcomed the dignitaries, faculty members, and nursing staff, highlighting the critical role of nurses in ensuring safe waste management practices at the point of care.
This was followed by addressing the gathering by Dr. Krishna Murthy V. R, Chief of Hospital (COH), BGS Medical College and Hospital, who emphasized institutional accountability, regulatory compliance, and the importance of continuous training in hospital waste management.
A formal felicitation of the guest speakers was conducted by Dr. Krishna Murthy V. R, COH, BGS MCH, Dr. Pradeep Kumar N, RMO, BGS MCH, and Dr. Shamim Rahman, Professor, Microbiology and In-charge HOD, acknowledging the expertise and contributions of the invited faculty.
The scientific sessions began with an introduction and setting the context by Dr. Narendranath V, Professor of Hospital Administration, BGS MCH and Joint Secretary, ISHWM New Delhi. He provided an overview of evolution of Biomedical waste management in India, Purpose and Principles of BMW rules, Milestones and Innovations, Public -Private Partnership Model, ISHWM: Leadership and capacity building, Role of health care staff & Administrators.
The subsequent session on Hospital Waste Management: Best Practices for Safe Care was delivered by Dr. Raju V, Former Director, SIHFW, and President, ISHWM Karnataka Chapter. The session focused on segregation principles, colour coding, compliance with Biomedical Waste Management Rules, and the role of healthcare workers in minimizing risks.
After a brief tea break, Prof. G C Ranganath, Secretary, ISHWM Karnataka Chapter, conducted an informative session on Liquid Waste Management, highlighting effluent treatment processes & environmental safety.
The programme concluded with a session on Healthcare Worker Safety by Dr. Narendranath V, emphasizing occupational hazards, personal protective measures, and safe work practices in healthcare settings.
