National Eye Donation Fortnight Programme – 2025
Organised by the Department of Ophthalmology, BGS Medical College & Hospital

As part of the National Eye Donation Fortnight (25th August – 8th September 2025), the Department of Ophthalmology, BGS Medical College & Hospital, organised an awareness programme on 4th September 2025 at the MEU Hall, BGSMCH. The theme of this year’s observance was “Everyday Heroes”, highlighting the importance of eye donation and the selfless contribution of donors in restoring sight.

The programme commenced with a Welcome Address by Dr. Spoorthy S, Professor, Department of Ophthalmology, followed by an Invocation Song rendered by faculty members – Dr. Sinchana Adyanthaya, Dr.Jeevitha R, Dr. Chetana B S, Dr. Yashaswini S R and Dr. Nagapriya.

The event was formally *inaugurated by Dr. K. S. Gangadhara, Dean cum Principal, BGSMCH; Dr. Krishnamurthy V R, Chief of Hospital, BGSMCH; and Dr. Bharathi N, Professor & Head, Department of Ophthalmology.

An overview and Introduction to Eye Donation Fortnight was presented by Dr. Gnana Jyothi C Bada, Professor, Department of Ophthalmology, who emphasized the urgent need for corneal donations to address avoidable blindness.

To engage and entertain the audience, a fun-filled blindfold game was conducted, where participants attempted to draw the tail of an elephant while blindfolded. This activity symbolically represented the challenges faced by the visually impaired and created greater empathy among the attendees.

The Scientific Session included two insightful talks:

  • Dr. Yashaswini S R, Senior Resident, Department of Ophthalmology, spoke on “Eye Donation – A Perspective”.
  • Dr. Sinchana Adyanthaya, Assistant Professor, Department of Ophthalmology, delivered a session on “Corneal Transplantation – Restoring Vision Through Eye Donation”, highlighting advancements in surgical interventions and the transformative impact of corneal grafts.

The programme concluded with a Vote of Thanks by Dr. Krishnaprasad A H, Associate Professor, Department of Ophthalmology, who expressed gratitude to the dignitaries, faculty, students, and participants for their active involvement. The programme was conducted under the graceful compering of Dr. Jeevitha R, Assistant Professor, Department of Ophthalmology, who served as the Master of Ceremony.

The event was well attended by faculty members and hospital staff. The sessions inspired participants to become advocates for eye donation and carry forward the message of gifting vision to the needy.

Through this initiative, BGSMCH reaffirmed its commitment to public health awareness and community service, encouraging individuals to come forward as “Everyday Heroes” by pledging to donate their eyes.
